Tampa, FL. (April 2, 2026) – Tampa Bay Sun FC is excited to announce the signing of defender Anna Heilferty as a free agent, adding experience, versatility, and attacking presence to the club’s back line. Known for her ability to contribute on both sides of the ball, Heilferty is a defender with a goal-scoring instinct, capable of impacting the game in the attacking third while maintaining defensive stability.
Heilferty joins the Sun after competing with the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), where she developed at the professional level following her selection as the 19th overall pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft. Heilferty was recognized not only for her performance on the field, but also for her character off the pitch as well. She was named the club’s nominee for the 2024 Lauren Holiday Impact Award, honoring her for her notable service and leadership within the community.
“Anna is a player who raises the standard the moment she steps on the field,” said Sun Head Coach Denise Schilte-Brown. “Her experience speaks for itself, but what really sets her apart is her ability to influence the game from multiple positions. She gives us options, depth, and a competitive edge—we’re thrilled to have her.”
She made an immediate impact at the collegiate level at Boston University, where she graduated with a degree in biology. Heilferty earned Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors in 2017, and continued to lead her team offensively despite playing in a defensive role. She was also named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and earned All-Patriot League honors in each of her three seasons with the Terriers. Across her career, she either led or tied for the team lead in points and goals each season, finishing with 13 career goals, five of which were game-winners. She then ultimately became the first player in program history to be selected in the NWSL Draft.
“Adding Anna is a reflection of the direction we’re taking as a club and the level of competitor we’re committed to bringing to Tampa Bay,” said Sun General Manager and President Christina Unkel. “Her experience in the NWSL, combined with her leadership skills, makes her a strong addition to our organization. We’re proud to welcome her to Tampa Bay as we continue building a roster that reflects our standards and our vision for the future.”
