The Tampa Bay Sun FC partnered with the Hillsborough County Public School District to ensure the safety of students during the US solar eclipse. The Club donated 10,000 pairs of specially certified solar eclipse glasses to all elementary and K-8 schools within a ten-mile radius of the new Riverfront stadium at Blake High School.
Glasses were distributed to 4th and 5th graders, as well as after-school program participants, allowing them to safely observe this rare celestial event. Each pair of glasses came with an informational card detailing eclipse safety tips and interesting facts about the phenomenon.
“When your team’s name is the Sun, you can’t sit on the sidelines during the biggest event involving the Sun for the next 21 years!” said Tampa Bay Sun FC President Christina Unkel. “This is a once-in-a-generation chance for students to be inspired and explore the possibilities of a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We’re excited to help thousands of students experience this moment.”
Kickoff for the 2024 season is just around the corner, and the Sun FC is committed to being a positive force in the Tampa Bay community. This donation reflects our dedication to supporting education and fostering a love of science among our youth.
